sounds can be sleep's best friends... or worst foes
The sounds you hear can either calm or rattle your nerves . These sounds can range from pouring rain, the faintest hum, your favorite music, the busy city below or the rhythmic beat of a mother's heart. Depending on who you are each type of sound will have a helpful or hurtful effect on sleep.
The good news - you are more in control than you think... you can use certain sounds to improve your sleep quality. First, it's important to understand the impact of sound on sleep.
Have you ever been startled by a loud noise?
You've been sensitive to sound from the minute you were born. This sensitivity is there to appreciate the world around you and even to protect you from harm. It can also wreck your sleep.
FAINT SOUNDS CAN ALSO RUIN YOUR SLEEP !
According to the latest research, depending on your sleep stage, sounds as low as a whisper in a quiet room or an appliance can wake you.
If both loud and faint sounds are bad for sleep, what options do you have?
The answer depends on you... there is no one-size-fits-all. You have to try out different things.
What has worked for me? (in order of preference)
- Complete silence (obvious and helpful for sleep, but not realistic for most)
- White noise (a mixture of different sounds designed to induce a state of sleep)
- Certain environmental sounds (rain, wind, etc.)
- Certain TV shows, especially the boring ones :-)
You have to try these and other things to learn what suits you.
OTHER KNOWN METHODS TO INDUCE SLEEP
Although all sleep improvement methods are not created equal, there is however, technology touted as effective in inducing sleep for all.
